Amboseli National Park is located in the North West of Mountain Kilimanjaro on the border of Tanzania and Kenya. Amboseli National Park covers a total land area of 392 square kilometers and forms the unfenced core of an 8,000 km2 ecosystem that includes large tracts of Maasai community land both in Kenya and across in Tanzania.
Amboseli National Park was formally called the Maasai Amboseli Game Reserve. The National Park is located in the southern part of Kenya in Kajiado South Constituency in Kajiado County. Amboseli was designated as a Reserve in 1906. Amboseli was gazetted as a National Park in 1974 – with the main aim of protecting the core of this unique ecosystem. Amboseli is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve that was declared in 1991. Amboseli National Park has a variety of ecological zones, which include natural dry mountain forest, mountains, savannah rangelands, wetlands and swamps. These areas covered by the park are home to a wide variety of wildlife species, including elephants, lions and giraffes among others. Amboseli national park is a prominent home for wildlife, and famous for the giant tusker elephants in Kenya. The National Park has the largest population of elephants in Kenya – a great place to see these large mammals in large numbers. Wildlife in the park include giraffe, spotted hyena, zebra, buffalo, blue wildebeest, cheetah, elephant, giraffe, hippopotamus, Thomson’s gazelle, impala, lion, cape buffalo and many more.
The wildlife viewing in the park is usually done on safari game drive – expect to spot elephant just a few meters from your safari vehicle while in Amboseli National Park. Wildlife viewing can be done all year round in Amboseli however the dry season is the most recommended for the best experience in this park. The dry season is usually between June and October.
The main reason as to why you should visit during the dry season is that animal viewing is much easier and opportunities to spot them in large numbers are high.
Amboseli national park hosts a great number of bird species with more than 420 species registered in the park. The Park has three major habits categories that are inhabited by the birdlife; the swampy region of the park, grassland birds living in savannah plains and forest birds living in acacia vegetation.
The commonly encounter on safaris in Amboseli National Park include African jacana, goliath heron, African swamp hen, Hartlaub’s bustard, rufous chatterer, common redshank, Dickinson’s kestrel, Eurasian thick-knee, greater flamingo, Hartlaub’s bustard, lesser flamingo, long-toed lapwing, and many more.
