DAY 2: –Transfer to Nyungwe forest national park –Canopy walk
After breakfast from hotel, transfer to Nyungwe Forest National Park. Nyungwe Forest is home to tall old Mahoganies, Ebonies and giant Tree Ferns tower above you, whilst Orchids and another Epiphytes cling to every branch. Brightly colored birds flit around; butterflies are everywhere, including a variety of primates for which Nyungwe National Park is renowned. On the way you will branch off to Uwinka for your canopy walk briefing.
The Canopy is about 2 hours hike from the starting point at Uwinka RDB Visitors center. This forest is on a mountain and so the hike down is quite slippery because of the mere fact the ground on which the tourists trek is sometimes wet and moist. The bridge suspended between huge trees gives one a feel of fresh air, 60 meters above the forest floor. Besides the freshness in the air and splendid aerial view of the trees, you will enjoy the sight of beautiful birds flying across as you enjoy the walk.
You will transfer to the lodge for your dinner and overnight.
DAY 3: Chimpanzee Tracking – transfer to Volcanoes national park
This morning at 05:00am you will meet with your park guide at the park headquarters for chimpanzee tracking briefing. After the briefing you will drive to the starting point in Cyamudongo sector.
Nyungwe is an ideal destination for lovers of primates, with 13 different species living here, and most visitors will go for at least one tracking experience, the most popular of which is chimpanzee trekking. Starting very early in the morning, chimps are tracked in groups of eight, you will have just one hour in their company once they’ve been located. Sightings aren’t as reliable or as clear as gorillas however, since they often remain in dense forest, but their engaging playfulness and human-like characteristics make the long day worthwhile. Later you will transfer to Volcanoes national park with a lunch stopover in Kibuye next to Lake Kivu. Here you have an option of a boat ride on Lake Kivu before lunch and on arrival check in at your lodge for dinner and overnight.
DAY 4: Gorilla trekking in Volcanoes national park- Visit the Twin Lakes
On day 4, transfer to the Volcanoes National Park offices for yet another hike “Gorilla Trekking” briefing still will start at 7:00 am. You will then start your walk at 8:00 am.
Volcanoes National Park protects the steep slopes of this magnificent mountain range and is the home of the rare mountain gorilla and the rich mosaic of montane ecosystems, which embrace evergreen and bamboo forest, open grassland, swamp and heath, but the high point will be spending an hour with the remarkably peaceful gorillas despite their size and appearance as they go about their daily life, feeding, playing, resting and raising their young.
After your trek, you will drive to the Lodge to freshen up before lunch and this evening you will visit the twin lakes of Burela and Ruhondo. Thereafter, you will transfer back to the lodge for dinner and overnight.
